Director Sherry Santana
has pulled a collection of
beautiful, biting poems from
Edgar Lee Masters' The
Spoon River Anthology and
created a reader's theatre
piece that fits suitably
on the Hard Bargain Amphitheatre's
stage.
The citizens of Spoon River are restless.
Some have secrets, never told to a single
soul. Others just have something to say,
or an injustice to fight, or want to share
lessons in life. All bring you into the lives
of a town full of history.
Did I mention that these citizens reside
on the hill in a Spoon River cemetery?
Edgar Lee Masters has written poems, all
based on actual people of the towns in which
he lived and all ahead of their time. Issues
that one would never speak of a hundred years
or so ago are given light and are just as
controversial as they are now: infidelities,
rape, molestation, homosexuality, alcoholism,
murder, betrayal, religion, politics, and
war.
Come join these talkative souls on an upcoming
summer evening and be prepared to be taken
away by this haunting combination of poetry
and music.
